Welcome to Y3 Baobab Class! Miss Burnett teaches Monday – Wednesday and Mrs Widgery teaches Wednesday – Friday. Mrs Mustafa is our Teaching Assistant and Miss Mitchell also works with us.
In Maths, we will continue to use our new scheme, Maths No Problem. Particular focus this term will be on continuing to develop skills in multiplication and division using both mental and written calculation strategies. We will then move on to develop children’s understanding of length, mass and volume, time and money.
In English, we will read a selection of fiction texts and poetry – starting with The Hodgeheg by Dick King-Smith - and will look in particular at structuring plot and describing characters within our narrative writing. After half term, we will focus on writing to persuade, including writing letters and debating. Grammar topics this term will include subordinate clauses, fronted adverbials, organising paragraphs around a theme and using inverted commas to punctuate speech. Some of our spelling work will concentrate on revising patterns that we looked at last term.
In Science, this half term we will be studying Rocks including observing and classifying rocks, learning how fossils are formed and what soil is made of. After half term we will be studying Light.
In Topic this term, we will be using our geographical skills to look at ‘Around the World’. We will explore the similarities and differences between different parts of the world as well as key geographical concepts.
Each half term, children are given a sheet of homework tasks covering a range of subjects. There is one task for each week and homework should be completed and handed in each Wednesday (the dates for each task are on the sheet).
Children have weekly spellings which are stuck into their homework book. These are also tested on a Wednesday.
We encourage children to read regularly and keep a note of any reading (accompanied by an adult or independent) in their reading diary. Children must change their reading books each Wednesday, although they are free to bring them in at other times to be changed.
We are also practising our times tables and have an informal test each Friday morning. In Y3, children should already know their 2x, 5x, and 10x tables and should be learning their 4x and 8x tables.
PE is on a Monday and Thursday morning. Children must have their PE kit in school on these days.
We have recorder lessons on a Tuesday.
Forest School starts on Friday 12 January 2018 and will run until Friday 9 February 2018. Please make sure your children have suitable clothing as mentioned in the information sent home.
Please don’t hesitate to contact us on our class email addresses if you have any concerns or questions at email@example.com.
