Welcome to Gingko class.
Miss Byrne will be taking you through Year 2 with the help of Mrs Madhavan.
We are very much looking forward to the year ahead!
We are learning
In English this term, we will be reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. The children will write recounts in the form of diaries and they will learn to write persuasively focusing on the key techniques to use.
We will also be looking at different books written by Anthony Brown and will be comparing these in detail. The children will write their own narrative stories based on these books
In Maths, we will be continuing to follow our Maths No Problem scheme. The children will learn to identify and name the fractions ½, ¼, 2/4 and ¾. In addition, we will learn to find these fractions of shapes as well as numbers.
The children will also begin to learn to tell the time, focusing on o’clock, half past, quarter past, quarter to and to the nearest 5 minutes. Please continue to support your children at home by practising the formal methods for addition and subtraction, word problems and the multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 times tables.
In Science, we will be learning about plants. In class we will grow a range of seeds and bulbs and the children will discover what a plant needs to grow healthily. We will explore the simple life cycle of a plant and the differences between healthy and unhealthy plants.
In Topic, we will be learning about amazing activists in History. They will explore what life was like for different groups of people, why certain people are remembered and the impact they had.
The children will be given weekly spellings to practise for their test every Friday. We are also introducing a weekly times tables test so please ensure your child practises their 2, 5 and 10 times tables.
In addition to these, children are expected to read daily for at least 20 minutes and record this in their reading records. It is particularly important that children answer the questions at the front and back of the reading books to practice their retrieval and comprehension skills. There is also Bug Club for additional reading if needed. We ask that children have their reading records in school daily so we can record when we have heard them read and any comments.
PE will take place on Tuesday mornings and Friday afternoons. On these days, please can your child arrive at school wearing their PE kit.
Every child needs to bring their full PE kit including a top in their house team’s colour, clean socks and suitable trainers.
Water bottles: Please ensure your child has a named water bottle in school. These must be taken home at the end of each day and returned the following day. Due to COVID, please note we will not be able to provide the children with drinking cups.
Please do not hesitate to contact us on our class email address if you have any concerns or questions at firstname.lastname@example.org
If you need to speak to us directly about anything, then after school when you pick up your child is the best time.
Thank you for your continued support.
