Welcome to Oak Class.
In Oak class, Miss Burnett will teach Monday - Wednesday and Mrs Widgery will teach Wednesday - Friday.
We are learning
In English we will continue to read Holes by Louis Sachar. We will develop our writing skills by producing newspaper reports, a descriptive narrative and a piece of persuasive writing. We will then read the classic poem, The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes. We will finish the term by reading some more contemporary fiction.
In Maths we will continue to follow our Maths No Problem curriculum. We will cover the remaining parts of the curriculum – position and movement; graphs and averages and negative numbers. We will also recap key concepts and consolidate our learning in important topics such as fractions and using the four operations to solve problems.
In Science our unit of learning is on biodiversity. We will learn why it is so important, the impact of human activity on biodiversity and how collective action can make a difference.
In topic we will be studying a geography unit on Mountains, Volcanoes & Earthquakes. We will learn more about the formation of the Earth, how mountains and volcanoes are formed and use grid references to locate points on an Ordnance Survey map.
Our RE unit is about the Journey of Life and how significant life events are marked in different faiths.
In PHSE this half term we will be learning how to keep ourselves healthy and the impact smoking, drugs and alcohol can have on our wellbeing. After half term our PHSE lessons will cover transition to secondary school and relationships and sex education (we will send out further information about this).
HomeworkThis year, homework and each week’s spellings will be set on Seesaw. There is also a reading homework activity for each week which can be found in your child's Reading Record. Children are expected to read regularly and record this in their Reading Record. Please encourage your child to select a book to read from the book corner in their classroom and to choose a new book when they have finished each one. They must have their Reading Records in school every day.
PE: This year Oak class have PE on a Monday and Thursday. Every child needs to bring in a full PE kit including a top of their house team’s colour, clean socks and suitable trainers.
In the second half term, it is our turn to enjoy forest school with Mrs Miller. We will send out more information about this nearer the time.
As is traditional in the summer term of Year 6, we will be practising for our end of year production. Details will be sent out in due course.
