Welcome to Olive Class.
Your teacher is Mrs Hennessy.
We are learning
This term in English we will be writing to entertain. In the first few weeks of the term, we will be participating in a Trust wide activity, where students will each write a 500 word story to share with other year 5 classes in the Trust. Our texts for the term will be The Lady of Shallott by Alfred Tennyson and Oranges in No Man’s Land by Elizabeth Laird.
In Maths, we are working on fractions, decimals, percentages, word problems, geometry and position and movement. During the term we will be testing all times tables in our maths lessons therefore, it is recommended that your child practise their times tables at home when possible.
In our Topic lessons, we will be investigating early Islamic civilization including Baghdad.
In Science, we will be exploring forces. Throughout the term, we will be experimenting with forces, such as friction, air and water resistance, pulleys and levers.
Our focus this term is to encourage students to do more home reading and to practise their reading skills. Each week, students will have different reading tasks to complete in their new reading records. This book must be brought home every day and returned to school the following day.
A homework guide will no longer be sent home. However, we will continue to hand out a maths worksheet or task each week.
Spelling will continue as normal. All spelling lists are stuck in their homework books for them to practise at home. We will have a spelling test every Friday morning.
