Olive class

Welcome to Olive class.

Olive class is taught by Miss Bennett (Mon-Wed) Miss Tarbuck (Wed-Fri)

We are learning

In English, we will be reading two exciting new books, Boy in the Tower and New Kid. These texts will inspire the children to write a wide range of text types like narratives, newspaper reports and even create their own graphic novels!

During the Summer term, we will make sure that the children are covering the grammar and spelling objectives for Year 5.

In Maths, we will be following our Maths No Problem curriculum. We will continue to start each unit with a recap of the previous year’s learning to ensure that the children have the necessary number skills and strategies. We will be continuing to learn how to measure and draw angles using a protractor, as well as understanding angles in shapes. Then, the children will learn about position and movement; measurements; area and perimeter; and volume.

In Science, we are learning about Biomimicry. The children will learn about how humans can learn from nature to create more efficient inventions. The children will use real life examples to help understand how nature could solve some global issues, including climate change.

In the second half term, we will be learning about Human Life Cycle – How do we change? The children will be comparing the human life cycle to the life cycles they learnt about in the previous term. They will learn about how their bodies will change throughout their lives.

In our Topic work, we are studying The Amazon. The children will be learning about the many plants and animals that can be found in the Amazon as well as what threatens the amazing rainforest. The children will use their learning to create a persuasive speech on how to support the Amazon rainforest.

In the second half term, we will be answering the following key question: Who gets remembered and why? The children will look at statues and monuments across the UK and consider what or who is being remembered and whether this is important or not.

Homework

Each half term, we will send home a week by week planner of spellings. These will be tested on a Friday.

When we start homework this term, it will be posted on Seesaw to be completed over the course of this term. It will consist of two English activities, two Maths activities, two Topic activities, one Science, one Art, one PE and one Computing activity. These will be related to the term’s learning and need to be posted onto Seesaw.

Children are expected to read at least 3 times a week and record this in their reading records. They must have their reading records in school every day.

Reminders

PE lessons are on Tuesdays and Wednesday.

Please ensure that your child always has their PE kit at school.

Please do not hesitate to contact us on our class email address if you have any concerns or questions at olive@churchfields.bromley.sch.uk

However, if you need to speak to us directly about anything, then after school when you pick up your child is the best time.

Thank you for your continued support.
