Welcome to Sycamore class.
Your teachers are Miss Luker, Mrs Chagtai and Ms McAndrew.
We are learning
This term in maths we will be learning about measurements. We will be exploring how to measure mass, volume and length, how to choose appropriate units of measurement to carry out these investigations and how to convert units of measurement between grams and kilograms, litres and millilitres and metres, centimetres and millimetres.
In the second half of the term we will be moving on to area and perimeter. We will be looking at how to measure the surface area of standard and non-standard shapes.
We will also be working on geometry – identifying and classifying triangles and quadrilaterals, identifying and measuring angles and exploring symmetry of different shapes.
In English we will be looking at poetry. We will begin by writing our own ‘fast’ style of poetry, drawing on the children’s previous knowledge of word classes whilst making links to our class text ‘Krindlekrax’.
We will then be linking our poetry to our Science topic of Sound by exploring ‘The Sound Collector’ and attempting to write our own Sound Collector poems to perform.
As part of our non-fiction writing, we will be exploring diary entries linked to the Aztecs and non-chronological reports linked to Science.
In the second half of the term we will be using the picture book ‘Journey’ by Aaron Becker to develop our writing skills. We will be using pictures from the book to inspire us to develop character, setting and plot and we will be working on developing the use of speech punctuation through the use of dialogue as we attempt to bring the story to life.
In Science, we are learning about Sound. We will be identifying how sounds are produced, how they travel to the ear and what happens to the sound between the ear and the brain. We will be carrying out investigations involving musical instruments to help us understand how particles vibrate to create sound, change the volume and change the pitch of a sound.
Topic – The Aztecs
We will be using maps and atlases to locate key areas of Mexico and South America. We will be exploring the role of a timeline in identifying and ordering key events from history. We will then look at some historical artefacts from the Aztec period and explore what the artefacts tell us about the Aztec people and what it was like living during this period. Finally, we will be investigating the significance of chocolate to the Aztec people and the impact this invention has had on the rest of the world
Homework is given out at the start of each half term. Homework should be handed back in on Wednesday along with your child’s reading challenge book. Homework and reading challenge books will be returned on Friday.
If your child would like to create PowerPoint presentations for their homework, or show us photographs, please do email them to email@example.com.
PE lessons are on Tuesday and Thursday.
The children will be expected to take part unless we have received a note from parents/carers.
All children are expected to have correct PE kit, including a tracksuit and t-shirt in their house colours.
