What we want the curriculum to achieve
Our inclusive curriculum enables children to develop their critical thinking and creativity through a wide-ranging curriculum that enables them to use computational thinking techniques to embed resilience and perseverance in their learning. Children develop their computing skills through a high quality curriculum to learn about data manipulation, coding, and awareness of the importance of e-safety.
The children develop a love of computing and the confidence to approach new software, coding languages whilst developing their skills as Excellent Learners.
How does the subject fit into the whole school curriculum offer?
A high quality curriculum helps to eauip children with the skills to access the technology used in the modern world. They can safely and confidently navigate the online world to research and learn to make informed decisions about the information they find. Coding reinforces mathematical concepts, both implicitly through logical thought and algorithms to solve problems, and explicitly with UCL’s Scratch Maths.
What is special about our curriculum?
Through our Computing curriculum, we cover a wide range of topics encompassing the wider curriculum whilst ensuring we cover all areas of the computing curriculum. From Reception, children begin to learn the basic computing skills forming the foundations for a secure start to the Churchfields Computing Curriculum. The children are able to build upon previous learning by returning to coding concepts or using more ambitious techniques when displaying data. The children are taught to think like computational thinkers, honing the approaches and concepts, whilst learning to problem solve and persevere.
What is the structure of teaching and learning?
Every class from Reception to Year 6 has a weekly 55-65 min lesson in the Computing suite with our specialist Computing teacher.
What will children achieve by the end of EYFS, KS1 and KS2?
At the end of EYFS, children can operate simple equipment and use a range of age-appropriate programs. They understand that information can be retrieved from computers and can use basic coding skills to program simple toys.
On completing KS1, children have begun to explore data manipulation, creating documents in word, PowerPoint presentations, and information texts using Publisher. All children explore keyboard and mouse skills, using MS Paint to create a range of art. KS1 children have begun their journey to become computational thinkers, using the computational concepts of logic, evaluation, algorithms. Patterns decomposition and abstraction. They are also learn how to approach coding, becoming skilled at adapting, creating, debugging, persevering and collaborating.
On completing KS2, children continue to learn how to think like computational thinkers. Children are confident when approaching coding, aware of the importance of refining and debugging. They build on prior KS1 knowledge and have begun to explore some KS3 areas, such as Python.
Children leave Churchfields as digital manipulators, creating art, films, animation and photography. They are able to create logically named folders and store their learning. Children have secure data skills, having used a range of products to create presentations, documents and spreadsheets.
Children understand e-safety and how to navigate the digital world safely and confidently.
