My name is Mr Sweeney and I am the PE teacher at Churchfields Primary School.

My name is Mr Sweeney and I am the PE teacher at Churchfields Primary School.

Children from Year 1 through to Year 6 have two lessons every week, exploring a range of different skills and activities.

There are lots of opportunities to participate in after school sports clubs which take place every day.

We are learning

Reception: Pupils are introduced to a range of running, jumping and throwing activities designed to develop agility, balance and coordination. Pupils practice various sports day events including the sack race, long jump and relay.

Year 1: Pupils are taught to a range of running, jumping and throwing activities designed to develop agility, balance and coordination. Pupils practice running over longer distances and throwing different objects such as bean bags, foam discs and javelins.
Year 2:  Pupils experience sprinting over distances of 30m and 60m and are taught the correct technique when starting a race. In field events children refine their throwing techniques and are introduced to different stances and grips.

Year 3: Pupils develop their speed and endurance over more challenging distances of 150m and 200m. Children develop their knowledge and understanding of strategy when running over longer distances. In field events pupils are introduced to the shot put and the triple jump.

Year 4: Pupils record personal bests on the track for sprints, middle distance and long distance events. Pupils are supported to become more independent in terms of measuring and recording times and distances. In the field children have opportunities to throw the javelin, shot and discus as well as the long and triple jump.

Year 5: Pupils experience training for speed, strength and power and are taught about the fitness requirements of different events. Pupils refine their techniques in sprinting, middle distance, javelin, shot put, long jump, triple jump and relay.

Year 6: Year 6 pupils refine their techniques in sprinting, middle distance, javelin, shot put, long jump, triple jump and relay. Pupils are encouraged to become increasingly independent by recording and measuring events and starting races. Pupils use ipads to analyse their own performances and suggest ways to improve.

Other Events

Sporting events and matches take place throughout the year and we have both intra and inter school competitions in athletics, cross country, football and athletics.

Reminders

Please make sure your child knows when they have P.E and ensure their kit is in school on those days. Children require trainers, navy shorts, a coloured t-shirt (depending on which house they are in) and a tracksuit for the colder months as most lessons will be outside.

Please do not hesitate to contact me at pe@churchfields.bromley.sch.uk if you have any concerns or queries.

Thank you for your support.
